DIY Guide: 3 Easy Steps to Change the Caulk Around Your Bathtub

DISCLAIMER: This post was developed in sponsored partnership with DAP Canada, however, as always, all opinions are genuine.

After a massive bathroom makeover, I was still left with old discoloured and mouldy caulk around my bathtub. If you have a similar problem, this is actually a very simple fix that can enhance the appearance of your bathroom and prevent water damage. I’ll be using DAP AMP Kitchen & Bath Sealant, a new hybrid sealant that outperforms silicone. It is 100% waterproof, dries in 30 minutes and is specifically formulated to prevent mould and mildew growth.

Here are 3 simple steps to help you through the process.

What You'll Need:

DAP AMP Kitchen & Bath Sealant

Caulk remover tool or utility knife

Cleaning cloths

Caulking gun

Painter's tape

Eye protection

Step 1: Remove Old Caulk & Prepare the Surface

1. Cut the Old Caulk: Use a caulk remover tool or utility knife to carefully cut along the edges of the old caulk and use a putty knife or scraper to lift and remove it.

2. Clean the Area: After removing all the old caulk, clean the area with rubbing alcohol or a caulk remover. This will help remove any residue and ensure a good bond for the new caulk.

3. Dry the Area: Make sure the surface is completely dry before applying new caulk.

4. Tape Off Edges (optional): If you are a beginner and/or you want to make sure you get a clean application, you can apply painter’s tape along the edges of the bathtub as a guide.

Step 2: Apply New Caulk

1. Load the Caulk Gun: Cut the tip of the DAP AMP Kitchen & Bath Sealant tube at a 45-degree angle. Puncture the inner seal if necessary. Load the tube into the caulking gun.

2. Apply the Caulk: Starting at one end, apply a steady bead of caulk along the joint where the tub meets the wall.

3. Smooth It Out: After applying the caulk, dip your finger in water and smooth the bead for a clean finish. This also helps to push the caulk into the joint for a better seal.

Step 3: Finishing Touches

1. Remove the Tape: Peel away the painter's tape while the caulk is still wet. This will give you clean edges without pulling any caulk away.

2. Let It Dry: DAP AMP Kitchen & Bath Sealant dries in 30 minutes.

As you can see in this before/after picture, changing the caulk made such a huge difference. It is a simple DIY that any beginner can take on with just a few tools.
